Contracts for difference allow investors to take long or short positions, and unlike future contracts have no fixed expiry date, standardized contract or contract size. Trades are conducted on a leveraged basis with margins typically ranging from 1% to 30% of the notional value for CFDs on leading equities.

CFDs can be sold unprotected, and offer the possibility to register gains on both bullish and bearish markets. They can also be used to cover long positions without selling shares.

Exempt from commissions, they offer short-term contracts procuring a greater flexibility. With CFDs the investor has the possibility to buy instruments for a short and limited period of time and in sectors that stayed closed to individual investors during many years.

Online CFD transactions permit multiplication of up to 20 times realized investments. Like with Forex, it is also called margin trading. This acts as a type of transaction comprising of accrued risks.
